Not such important, but as an ice cream lover I felt in my first years in India a bit lost. But in the last 2-3 years, means from 2008 onwards the situation has improved. First ice cream better packed came up in the grocery shops and then ice cream parlors have popped up all over the city and the people enjoy it especially the youth is meeting there and enjoys. It has become fashionable to go there, the outlets are open from 11 or 12 am to 10 and 11 pm. The shops
have been nicely designed in the mine time to cater the youngsters and invite to come and stay.
Still there are some advices to avoid trouble. Never eat ice cream at the street side stored only in carts and without active cooling. If you go to ice cream parlours, check if the cooling facilities are convincing and the cooling chain looks intact. If crowd is there and with that the fast turning of the product can be seen, it is a place to start. There are different chains like Ice Cream Corner, Polar Bear, Italian Ice Cream, Amul and international brands to like Basket Robert, Swensens, Swirls, …. Try different brands because the sweetness and the flavor are also different. Tasting before buying is welcome. At the end the prices are not cheap – between 20 – 100 INR per coup, but at least we can follow our addiction.
